Sunny Tug Arrives in Chicago

Sunny Tug has safely arrived in Chicago!  The folks at Winter Island Yacht Yard did a great job securing her and protecting her for the journey.   Now she just needs a good clean to get the bugs and road grime off!  Hats off to the truck driver, Roland Hanes, who also did a great job of driving the 1,000 or so miles and keeping me up to date on his progress. 

The folks at Crowley's Marine were also very helpful, and very quick, about transferring her from the truck to the water.

As I was working on board, we were passed by a tug and barge.  There will be a lot more of these to see as we head down the rivers in the days and weeks to come.

After an expensive Uber ride from my hotel near the airport to Crowley's Marine in Southeast Chicago I decided that a rental car would be a lot more cost effective and found a nearby Enterprise Car Rental Office.  This time I specified the smallest car possible and ended up with this nice little Mitsubishi.  Much easier to find parking than it was in the behemoth I was driving around Salem!

On my way back to the hotel I stopped in at West Marine.  I suspect I will have seen every West Marine store in the east by the time this trip is finished!

Friday, August 2, 2019 This is an update on the crazy last couple of days since we returned Sunny Tug to Winter Island Yacht Yard on Tuesday, July 30. I had a list of 18 items that needed to be looked at based on our shakedown cruise.  The two  biggies were the electrical system problems and the AIS (Automatic Identification System) not working. Here is a good write up on the West Marine website of how AIS works . The original plan was that Sunny Tug would be picked up Thursday, August 1 to start the transport to Chicago.   She actually left on Saturday morning, but Roland Hanes, the trucker, thinks he can still get to Chicago on Monday. Ipswich Bay To Gloucester via the Annisquam River and Blynman Canal

Sunday, July 28 2019 We left our mooring buoy at Ipswich Bay Yacht Club and since this was a "shakedown cruise" I wanted to try every possible system on board so we decided to try out to anchor at a nice sandy beach across from the moorage field.   We motored out there and then tried to find a good spot to anchor that would not get us fouled on the mooring buoys that were already in place, and that would not have us hit other boats.   Caroline also wanted to try and go for a swim. After several attempts we did manage to get the anchor to hold, but the current was too strong for swimming and I was not happy with our position relative to other boats, so we raised the anchor, but we could say that we had successfully done our first anchoring, even if it was only for five minutes! A nice run down the Tennessee to a secure anchorage.

Wednesday, October 9, 2019 Days 54 on the Loop – Pebble Isle Marina - Tennessee River to Double Island Anchorage (46.54 Miles). Pebble Island Marina was nice.    It was nice having shore power (electricity) to turn on the heat in the morning, since it was quite chilly.   I am supposed to have a diesel powered heater on board, but that has never worked and I have not been able to find anywhere to fix it.
