Moonshine!
Monday and Tuesday, September 29 and October 1, 2019
Days 45 and 26 on the Loop – Grand Rivers, KY (Green Turtle Bay Marina) (0 miles)
Monday was another hot and humid day. Laundry was done and reservations made at marinas for the next leg of the trip (from Green Turtle Bay to the Rendezvous in Rogersville, AL.). We (Vicky and I) will visit three marinas and have one night at anchor before reaching the marina at Joe Wheeler State Park, where the Rendezvous will be held.
As part of the planning process I called Joe Wheeler State Park, but was told that only person has access to the reservations information for Loopers and I would have to talk with her on Thursday.
A good thing that was completed was the replacement of the sacrificial anodes on my engine.
Tuesday was more fun.
I went for a swim in the indoor pool first thing. My back has been bothering me, with some painful muscle spasms, and I am hoping that swimming will help to relieve those. It is a nice facility and a good way to start the day.
It has been another hot and humid day, with the "feel like" temperature being around 98 degrees. :( Coastal areas in Oregon have been in the 60's with light rain.... Would love to have that!
Early in the afternoon I drove into town to pick up a large jug of white wine vinegar. This is another attempt to find something to remove whatever is crusted on my hull. Another Looper suggested a diluted solution of this would help.
I drove about an hour south to Casey Jones Distillery where (legal) moonshine is made. A very nice guide, Marie Ann, took me on a private tour.
At the distillery I got to meet Rosie. In the heat she was perfectly content to sleep inside the air conditioned doorway. She has her likeness on one of the product's label. :)
I did a tasting and the ones that were flavored (apple, peach, etc.) as well as the ones that had been matured in the oak barrels had pleasant tastes. The straight moonshine just (to me) tasted of strong alcohol and was not that pleasant; probably an acquired taste!
I came back to the boat for a nap, and plans to go to see Nathan and Callie for dinner on their boat. Unfortunately, Callie was not feeling well, so I went to the Thirsty Turtle to join other Loopers for drinks and dinner. Many of these new friends will be moving on in the next day or so and we will likely see each other when we are further down the river.
When I got up from my nap I had some very painful back muscle spasms. This is worrying. I am reading up on what to do about these, and hope I don't experience them when I am solo on the Loop! :(

On the right hand side are about 21 bottles that will be able to be processed for the final product. The ones at the beginning and the end of the batch are not usable. |
Some of the product is sold as clear moonshine, while the rest is put into charred white oak barrels. This is not bourbon, since they add sugar to this and bourbon does not have sugar added. |
