Trip to Britain Booked... The Dock at Night

Day 20 - 21 on the Loop – Alton, IL (0 miles)

 Fairly quiet for the last couple of days.  Jim came back on Thursday morning after we both realized that I had asked about a problem I was having with the steering and then we had both forgotten about it.   It was a simple fix of having some hydraulic fluid added.   I should say it is simple for Jim to fix, since he has a rig put together to easily feed the fluid into the small hole where the wheel is mounted.  If I had tried I would likely have had a large mess!

 I talked with my dad and made the decision that I should go back to visit with him in Britain.   It wasn't anything specific about the phone call, but it makes sense since I will be in one place for a few weeks, and am relatively close to a major airport, to do this now.  I will be flying out on Thursday, September 5 and returning on Friday, September 13.  This will still give me time to get ready for Kathleen's arrival and our departure on the next leg of the loop.

I went ashore to have lunch at My Just Desserts a small cafe in Alton that specializes in pies.   There soup and sandwich were very good and I also bought a pie to take to Rick and Keyon.  They live on a houseboat at the end of my dock and have invited me over for dinner.

In the evenings, when it has cooled down, it is nice to take a walk on the docks.  Here is a picture of the Alton Bridge from the end of one of the docks.

Thursday, October 10, 2019 Days 55 on the Loop – Double Island Anchorage to Aqua Harbor Marina - Tennessee River to Tenn-Tom Waterway (58.89 Miles). We had a quiet night at anchor in the spur of the river off of Double Island.  Alonsi  was up the river from us, but we had lots of room to ourselves.  The current was practically nil, but the river did go up by a foot or so overnight, which did not affect us.  In the morning it was nice to see the anchor come up clean.  This is because we had been anchored in sand and so did not have a huge clump of mud on the anchor when it came up.   My raw water wash down is not working, since the fuse holder has melted, so it was nice to not have to clean the anchor off! Ipswich Bay To Gloucester via the Annisquam River and Blynman Canal

Sunday, July 28 2019 We left our mooring buoy at Ipswich Bay Yacht Club and since this was a "shakedown cruise" I wanted to try every possible system on board so we decided to try out to anchor at a nice sandy beach across from the moorage field.   We motored out there and then tried to find a good spot to anchor that would not get us fouled on the mooring buoys that were already in place, and that would not have us hit other boats.   Caroline also wanted to try and go for a swim. After several attempts we did manage to get the anchor to hold, but the current was too strong for swimming and I was not happy with our position relative to other boats, so we raised the anchor, but we could say that we had successfully done our first anchoring, even if it was only for five minutes! Sunny Tug Returns to Shore, Upgrades and Repairs, and Shipping to Chicago

Friday, August 2, 2019 This is an update on the crazy last couple of days since we returned Sunny Tug to Winter Island Yacht Yard on Tuesday, July 30. I had a list of 18 items that needed to be looked at based on our shakedown cruise.  The two  biggies were the electrical system problems and the AIS (Automatic Identification System) not working. Here is a good write up on the West Marine website of how AIS works . The original plan was that Sunny Tug would be picked up Thursday, August 1 to start the transport to Chicago.   She actually left on Saturday morning, but Roland Hanes, the trucker, thinks he can still get to Chicago on Monday.
