An Evening in Chicago
Saturday, August 3 2019
Checked into my hotel early afternoon and after doing some financial and administrative work, including dealing with a bit of a scare when I received a notice from my healthcare provider that they were dropping my coverage (which turned out no to be true), I decided to go out for a walk. On my way I ran into this guy... I guess people in Chicago take personal protective equipment seriously! He was crossing a street so we did not have a chance to chat, but I believe their was some sort of convention nearby. At least, I hope that is what was happening! :)
A short distance from the hotel is a station for the "L" subway train system. The "L" is short for "Elevated." On a whim I decided to take the train into downtown Chicago, about a 35 minute trip from my hotel, which is near the airport. The ticket was $3 and I was not sure if that would only work one way or also covered the return.

Service was good, but it definitely noisier than the London Tube.
I looked up the Chicago "Bean" (officially called the "Cloud Gate") statue and found it was relatively close to the Washington station, so I got off there for the walk. The GPS on my phone was having some difficulties, and I also don't want to walk around holding my phone out as a map (too easy for someone to grab, and it points you out as a tourist), so I ended up on a circuitous route but it was just fun walking around a big city that was coming alive with Saturday night energy. Definitely different to be back in a place with skyscrapers!
It was fun to see the buildings reflected in the statue, and the creative ways people were taking selfies with the art work. 😃

I wandered back to the train station and found that my ticket was accepted by the machine, so it was good for the round trip!
So much learning along with the doing Gordon! Glad you had a non-boat day to relax and reflect in Chicago.
